Personal Statement The Freshman Mentoring Program

When I entered high school, I knew I wanted to get involved. I was not sure what groups or clubs I wanted to join, I just knew I wanted to be involved with my community. I didn’t make much of an effort in the beginning years to truly engage myself in the various groups and clubs offered at my high school. I am not sure if I was intimidated, nervous about trying new things, or maybe even a little scared. I was upset with myself because I know I am not the person who sits back and lets things come to me. I realized I had to take the first step to figure out how and who I wanted to help. I was determined to get myself involved in my school, so I forced myself to go outside my comfort zone and be the leader I wanted to be. I applied to be a part of the freshman mentoring program and was accepted in both my junior and senior year; earning a spot on the mentor executive board my senior year. This program assists incoming freshman with the transition into the high school. Being the first person the freshman came into contact with, I knew I had to put myself in a leadership role and be a friend and mentor to these students, not just on the first few days of school, but throughout their first year. I also became involved with Class representatives and the football team. I was never a captain or a class officer, but this was not going to stop me from being a leader. As a class rep, I was able to be a voice for my class and help plan out our year. Parker - Core Competency Project Week 2 - 832 Words

In this project, I will describe a scenario in which I am developing within my own ministry to engage people in helping them think theologically. The Church today is suffering greatly because many people are not engaged in Scripture, practicing spiritual disciplines, or thinking theologically. I hope to create a pattern to correct that and give them the ability to not just learn a little each week from a sermon, but take everything that comes at them and learn from it, while giving them the ability to teach others as well. Examining three models found in this week’s reading, Aware-Engage-Apply (Grenz and Olson 129-130), Attending-Asserting-Acting (Christian Thinking) and Analysis-Reflection-Application (Umbel), each three-fold model had the same basic principle: intake of knowledge, processing that knowledge, and using that knowledge. In order for this to be effective, I will need to address each of the three legs so that everything remains balanced. First, the intake of knowledge (other models use awareness, analysis, or attending), must be biblical sound. If people are to think theologically, they must be taught theologically first, which means we must teach them to Word of God in its entirety, not just select Scriptures to back up our thought of the day. The second leg of thinking is the processing of that knowledge; once a believer receives knowledge, he or she must know how to process that information in light of God and the Scriptures. Health Care in the United States and Affordable Care Act Free Essays

C4C Haylie Stanat POL SCI 211 – T5 14 February 2013 Healthcare in the United States Michael Tennant, a software developer and writer, questions why we should have the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. â€Å"From page 1 to page 906, ObamaCare is chock full of expensive, intrusive, and downright scary programs such as these. The law gives the federal and state governments virtually unlimited power to interfere in Americans’ lives, even within the confines of our own homes† (Tennant). The idea of this act first came up during the Clinton administration. They tried to develop a healthcare system just like â€Å"Obamacare† but it never went through. The system is similar and based off of what is happening in Europe, where the government controls the medical care system. Why did they want to start this? The Clinton administration believed too many people were not receiving adequate medical care and coverage. They wanted everyone to have healthcare regardless of their financial means. The socialized healthcare system has been said to intrude on the population’s right to make decisions for what their life requires and also be very costly to the people and the United States as a whole, and Tennant wants to do away with everything regarding â€Å"Obamacare†. Tennant points out that this act allows â€Å"the US government to expand its reach into the lives of its citizens. † Some of the provisions of the act allow the government home visitations by government agents, possibly including forced immunizations, and â€Å"Community Transformation Grants†. These grants are â€Å"designed to alter Americans’ lifestyles to conform to the whims of bureaucrats in Washington† (Tennant). This act seems like to Tennant, and many other advocates against Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, another way for the government to intrude on the freedom of its population. Others, like Matt Welch, the editor in chief of Reason magazine, argue there are many benefits that come from this act. He points out that France has a socialized health care system and it makes treatment less expensive and more accessible. The point being made is that the system only helps in areas of service and quality. There is no intrusion on the lives of its citizens, only trying to benefit their lives. Edmund F. Haislmaier also points out that when coverage that is basic, people with special needs have to work harder to make a plan that specifically fits them. Haislmaier states, â€Å"The effects will be one-size-fitsall coverage—so that patients are not â€Å"confused† by having choices—and elimination of employers’ freedom to design their own self-insured plans. When â€Å"confused† is used, it makes one believe that the government thinks we are incapable of helping ourselves and making the right decisions for our own lives. Like Tennant says, â€Å"It destroys individual self-reliance and, through a variety of provisions such as school-based health clinics and home visitation programs, the family unit. These are the foundations of the American Republic; without them the Uni ted States will become a society of helpless, dependent sheep with neither the desire nor the will to resist the state’s relentless encroachments on our liberties. Also, if Congress expands what benefits are essential and required to be given, the more Congress will make insurers, employers, and patients pay more for these essential services provided. This brings us to our next topic: the cost Obamacare will have on the Nation’s citizens. Those for â€Å"Obamacare† say that socialized healthcare has many benefits, and these benefits are better than the standards we have in the United States today. For example, Welch says, â€Å"ObamaCare opponents often warn that a new system will lead to long waiting times, mountains of paperwork, and less choice among doctors. Yet on all three of those counts the French system is significantly better, not worse, than what the U. S. has now. † The side that opposes also raises awareness to another flaw in the single-payer health care program. Some drugs that are life-saving are withheld from patients in countries with this health care system because these drugs are deemed â€Å"too costly. † When these people try to acquire these drugs outside the system, the government will go as far as to take their coverage away. Governments with this system are willing to do many things that affect the lives of their citizens to keep costs down. The system is also affecting businesses, small and large. Businesses with more than 50 full-time workers will be required to give their employees coverage. Most small businesses are supposed to benefit from this act. Sy Mukherjee states, â€Å"Studies have shown that Obamacare’s employer mandates will actually lower health spending for small businesses and only modestly increase large companies’ health care costs, all while substantially helping low-wage and working Americans receive the affordable health coverage they need. With this act, many more people will be covered, with little increase of cost to larger to businesses, and many more small businesses will have to spend less on healthcare. Throughout his article, Tennant, being biased against the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, does not think that the problems can be fixed with provisions. Michael Tennant believes the act should be completely repealed by Congress and he believes they violate one of gov ernment’s key values, freedom. He suggests the act needs to also be nulled by each state; this is the only way to help the United States’ healthcare system. These problems cannot be fixed merely by modifying a clause here and a proviso there. ObamaCare needs to be repealed in full before it can metastasize into a full-blown single-payer system. State-by-state nullification should also be undertaken. Then we can work on dismantling the rest of the federal healthcare behemoth. These are the only cures for what ails the American healthcare system†(Tennant). In other words, Tennant does not believe anything beneficial has come from this act. It should be completely abolished, not just fixed, because according to him, these problems in the act cannot be fixed by minor adjustments. Republicans have already tried to repeal this act, 33 times as of July 11, 2012. They keeping trying to pass bills of repeal through the House of Representatives but the Democratic-dominant Senate would not do the same. If the Republicans can get a bill to be approved by the Senate, they have a chance to make a difference. Of course the bill will go to the President, who will most likely veto since it was his main idea last election, but then it will go back through Congress. If the bill can be approved once again, they can over-ride the President’s veto and repeal the act. The question is: Should the United States reap the benefits of a socialized healthcare system the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act provides, or should she keep the values of the Founding Fathers and not let the government control every aspect of our lives? The Constitution gives the power to the government to promote general welfare. Then again, right after that the Constitution also secures â€Å"the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our posterity. † As Janda says, â€Å"in other words, the government exists to promote order and freedom†(55). Is the government not trying to promote order to the healthcare system we previously had, but at the same time controlling our lives and limiting the decisions we can make? The Founding Fathers relied on four principles to create the Constitution, one of these was Republicanism. According to The Challenge of Democracy, â€Å"Republicanism is a form of government in which power resides on the people†¦ † (Janda 56). How to Register for AP Tests and Classes SAT / ACT Prep Online Guides and Tips Wondering how to register for AP classes and tests? Get a complete guide to AP registration here – even if you’re homeschooled or your local school doesn’t have the AP program. How to Register for AP Classes The AP Registration process varies from school to school. Typically, you go through the regular class sign-up process to take APs, as long as you have taken the necessary pre-requisite classes. For example, many schools require students to take an introductory biology course before they can enroll in AP Biology. Your school's course catalog should list the necessary pre-requisites for each AP class. In some schools, you have to pass a placement test to register for an AP class. For example, my school required students to test into AP Calculus BC as well as AP Calculus AB – even if they had taken math up through Pre-Calculus. Based on your test score, you were placed into either Calculus BC, Calculus AB, or regular (non-AP) Calculus. We recommend asking one of your current teachers or the guidance counseling office about how to sign up for AP Classes at your school. They can let you know if there are any specific protocols outside of your school’s typical registration process, like placement tests or class size limits. If you attend a school without AP classes or you're homeschooled, you don't have to officially register for an AP class. You just need to register for the AP Exam later in the year (more on that below). It's up to you to either take a class that teaches most of the same material (e.g., taking a United States History course if you want to take the AP United States History exam) or to self-study during the year. How to Register for AP Tests If You Attend a School with AP Classes If you’re taking AP classes, your AP teacher typically alerts you to your school’s AP test sign-up process. They should inform you of the deadlines to register for the test. Some even walk you through the registration process! If you haven’t heard anything from your AP teacher yet or are just curious about your school's AP test sign-up protocol, track down your school’s AP Coordinator to find out the dates and deadlines at your school. AP Coordinator? Who's that? Each school that offers AP classes has a staff member (often a guidance counselor) who is given this title. It’s officially their job to handle AP test registration and coordinate with the College Board. If you don’t know who this person is, either check in with your guidance counselor or one of your AP teachers, they should know. Keep in mind you have to register for AP exams through your school, there is no way to register online. (Some students get confused because other College Board tests, like the SAT and SAT Subject tests, have online registration.) As part of your registration, you’ll turn in the $92 exam fee to the AP coordinator. And that price is per exam, by the way. (See ourpost on AP Exam costs to learn about getting financial aid for AP tests!) If You're Homeschooled or Your School Doesn't Have AP Classes If you’re homeschooled, or you attend a school without the AP program and are self-studying, you can still arrange to take AP Exams at a nearby participating AP school. To do this, you’ll contact the AP program itself. Contact AP Services no later than March 1st of the year you want to test, and they’ll give you the names of local, participating AP schools willing to test outside students, as well as the phone number of the AP coordinator at that school. This is the contact information for AP Services. Remember, you have to contact them to get the contact info of a local school that will give you the AP exams: Phone: 888-225-5427 International callers: 212-632-1780 Fax: 610-290-8979 Prepare a list of the AP Exams you are interested in taking before you call – this will help College Board find a school you can test at. Once you get their info from AP Services, call the AP Coordinators at the local school no later than March 15th to set up your testing. When calling Coordinators to arrange testing, make sure to tell them the following: That you got their contact information from College Board. That you are trying to find a school that will give AP exams to homeschooled students or students from schools that do not offer AP Exams. The AP exams you want to take. If you have a documented disability that requires accommodations. Once you locate a school that will host you, that school's AP Coordinator is responsible for ordering your exam materials, telling you when and where to report for the exams, and collecting your fees (which may be higher than the typical $92 to cover the school’s additional proctoring or administration costs). One last thing: your host school must administer the exams for you. The school cannot forward the AP exams to you or your school. That means on exam days, you'll have to travel to your host school (and be absent from your regular classes). Some Additional Guidelines for Signing Up Signing up for AP classes and tests is usually straightforward. Plus, there aren't restrictions on how many classes you can take each year (unless your school has its own rules). You can take as many AP Exams as can fit into your schedule. The AP Program doesn’t even require you to take an AP class before taking an AP Exam. The only restriction on registration from College Board is that you can’t take both Calculus AB and Calculus BC within the same year. This is because Calculus BC includes all of the material in Calculus AB – you even get an AB Subscore when you take Calculus BC! AP Calculus BC is essentially two math classes in one! If two of the exams you want to take are scheduled for the same time, ask your school’s AP Coordinator for information about taking one of the exams during the late-testing period. The late-testing period occurs in late May, to accommodate tests that overlap or students that run into last-minute problems like an injury. In general, popular AP exams don’t tend to overlap, so you’re more likely to run into this problem if you’re taking a more niche exam like Art History or Japanese. On Exam Day Keep these guidelines in mind to make sure you are ready to test in May once you’re registered! You have to bring a valid government- or school-issued photo ID with you to the exam. Even though the test is administered by your school, and all your teachers know you, you have to follow this rule. You’ll be turned away without your ID, so don’t forget it! If you have approval from the College Board to test with accommodations, you have to bring your Student Accommodation Letter. If you attend a school that doesn’t offer AP, you should not use the school code for the school where you are testing. Instead, make sure to use your own school’s code so your exam score(s) will be reported to your school. This means you need to get your school’s six-digit code from your principal or school counselor before exam day. Look for patterns, use logical reasoning, and work backward, if possible. STEP 4. Write down and show each step. Sometimes, by writing down their work, the student who may be a visual learner may best solve their problem – or this may overcome a set of obstacles standing in their way of solving the problem. This tactic allows the student to track and even double-check their approach to the problem as well as their mental process of getting the needed results. The student who is struggling with a math assignment must never attempt to solve the entire problem in their head. STEP 5. Verify that the answer is correct and makes sense to the student if they are in the future tested on solving such math problems.  Often in most textbooks, in math courses, especially, the answer is in the back of the book – that is if an assignment is taken directly from the textbook. STEP 6. The student must always remember that their professor’s job is to help them understand the math that the course calls for.
